Venom Inc. returned with a vengeance to Brick By Brick on June 25 after five months. The trio couldn’t stay away from San Diego and came back and received an overwhelming response on their second round.
The local one man act called Morphesia, casted some black metal magic on the stage. Though no Clamato and goat was safe from this guy, it was an impressive ride resurrecting the old school spirit of black metal.
The following acts cracked open the time capsule releasing the rapidness of thrash laced with nostalgic vocals. Encinitas based band, Dark Measure has a unique sound due to Jason Lenhard’s chameleon like vocals transitions to thick and gravely to a piercing screech.
Sunlord soon followed soon after Dark Measure, truly shining a light on old school thrash. Vocalist Alfonso Ferrazza presence was fueled by his Lemmy-esque vocals bringing a collective unholy tear in your eye.
Staying true to the pioneer theme, death metal legends Necrophagia tore up a new in the fairly thin crowd but managed to send drunks and relatively sober fans alike in to a free-for- all. The quintet treated fans to favorites such as “Cannibal Holocaust,” and “Embalmed Yet I Breathe.” Vocalist Frank “Killjoy” Pucci soldiered on with a busted leg and gave it his all showing his dedication and showmanship.
Once Necrophagia had made their triumphant exit, the anticipation for Venom Inc was at an all time high. Chaos ensued when the trio rightfully took their place on stage and kicked off their return with “Welcome to Hell” which fans rabidly devoured.
The trio played a slew of classic Venom songs such as “Poison,” “1000 Days in Sodom,” and the unmistakable “Black Metal.” Pucci joined the legendary trio momentarily onstage for a song creating a surreal wet dream for death metal fans and thrashers alike.
While Tony “Demolition Man” Dolan blared in to the microphone, guitarist Jeffrey “Mantas” Dunn and drummer Anthony “Abbadon” Bray interacted with fans. One extremely enthusiastic fan had his night made when Dunn acknowledged him and his fervor.
Venom Inc. proclaimed their love for sunny San Diego not once but twice, and though Dolan ranked Hell as the number one place he’d like to go, it was obvious he and the guys fell under the beachy
spell and will most likely return and put on another memorable show.
